Protests, pro-rallies planned across United Kingdom ahead of Trump's visit

Protests, pro-rallies planned across United Kingdom ahead of Trump's visit

The US president's plane touches down on Thursday lunchtime for a four-day visit sandwiched between the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation summit and his trip to Helsinki to meet Vladimir Putin.

The 20ft (6m) high inflatable, dubbed "Trump Baby", has been granted permission to rise above Parliament Square Gardens for two hours on Friday morning. The issue is, "Do they have freedom to protest, freedom to assemble and should they be allowed to do so?"

"Our trade and investment relationship is unrivalled - we are the largest investors in each other's economies and every day a million British people go to work for U.S. companies in the United Kingdom and a million Americans go to work for United Kingdom companies in the U.S.", May said. London Mayor Sadiq Khan authorized the flying of the diapered, cellphone-toting Trump balloon, which will fly near the Houses of Parliament between 9:30 and 11:30 am.

Much will rest on the personal dynamic between May, a staid, career politician who prides herself on careful decision-making, and Trump, the brash, often-bellicose, former reality TV star.

"He's coming into the lion's den and it is going to be really fun to watch", said Londoner Jack Smith, 28, at a party to celebrate U.S. independence from Britain on July 4.

On the NHS: Trump said it was "going broke and not working".

It would be a blow for Britain to lose that special status, said Shashank Joshi, a British security analyst.

Prime Minister May has abundant reasons to seek a close relationship with Trump - not least, the United States will be an even more vital trade partner once Britain leaves the European Union next year - but it is an uneasy embrace, given her opposition to many of his key policies. The future of its ties is uncertain, muddied by confusion over Brexit.

"Under Theresa May, the U.K.is a key Trump ally, so it's important that he can't waltz in without significant opposition", Lund-Harket concluded.

The baby blimp of President Trump is due to be flown over London this week.

Hundreds of thousands of Britons are expected to take to the streets nationwideon Friday in opposition to Trump, who is scheduled to arrive in the U.K. Thursday evening.

Following this, the president is also set to visit Scotland, where a reported 5,000 officers will be needed to handle his arrival, which would include specialist riot officers amongst other armed patrolmen and women. After the visit, Trump will decamp to Finland for a one-on-one with Russian President Vladimir Putin on July 16.
