Supergirl Season 4 Casts Nicole Maines As Transgender Superhero Dreamer

Supergirl Season 4 Casts Nicole Maines As Transgender Superhero Dreamer

The next season of the Mellissa Benoist-starring show will introduce the character of Nia Nal, aka Dreamer. Television's hit drama Supergirl took the stage at the show's Comic-Con 2018 panel session to reveal that the DC Super Hero series will welcome three new cast members for the upcoming 2018-19 season - including TV's first transgender superhero.

DC and The CW's Supergirl TV show has brought on a brand new superhero whose introduction will be a historic TV event. "A soulful young transgender woman with a fierce drive to protect others, Nia's journey this season means fulfilling her destiny as the superhero Dreamer (much like Kara came into her own as Supergirl)", Deadline reports. "I haven't really wrapped my head around it".

Speaking to Variety, Maines said: "It feels fitting to say with great power, comes great responsibility". "She's the superhero we need right now". Maines was also the subject of the book Becoming Nicole and appeared in the HBO documentary The Trans List. "And what we see on television has a very dramatic effect on our society".

Nicole Maines says she wants viewers to realise that a trans character's plotline doesn't have to revolve around them being trans.

While Maines is relatively new to acting, she first entered the public spotlight as a teenager in 2013 when the Maine Supreme Court ruled that it was unlawful for her high school to deny her access to the girls' bathroom.

She added: "I think that cis gender actors don't take roles out of malice, it's just a failure to realize the context of having cis gender people play trans gender characters". April Parker Jones (If Loving You Is Wrong, Jericho, The Last Ship) is set to play Colonel Haley, a "hardline career military woman" who is fiercely dedicated to her country and loyal to a fault to her commanding officers.

For now, we can look forward to seeing fresh faces Nia Nal, Colonel Haley, and Manchester Black team up with the rest of the Supergirl crew when season 4 premieres Sunday, October 14 at 8 PM ET on the CW.
