Tropical Storm Beryl Forms In The Atlantic

Tropical storm Beryl has formed in the Atlantic Ocean, according to the National Hurricane Center.

The newly formed tropical storm is now over 1,300 miles east-southeast of the Windward Islands, moving west-northwest.

Hurricane Beryl has maximum sustained winds of 75 miles per hour (120 km/h). Tiny (now) Tropical Storm Beryl defied the odds and unexpectedly strengthened (briefly) into a hurricane despite a rather hostile environment of cooler than normal waters, dry air, and Saharan dust.

On the forecast track, the center of Beryl will remain east of the Lesser Antilles through early Sunday.

Dominica issued a hurricane watch, while a tropical storm watch was in effect for the islands of Martinique, Guadeloupe, St. Martin and St. Barthelemy.

The Colorado State University released its seasonal forecast, saying that the east coast and Gulf of Mexico will experience a "below average hurricane season". A fast westward to west-northwestward motion is expected through the weekend of July 7 and 8.

Though the storm's intensity could still fluctuate unpredictably, its chances of regaining hurricane strength before reaching the Lesser Antilles, the arc of islands from the US Virgin Islands to Grenada, have dropped significantly, CNN meteorologists said. These shearing winds should weaken this system as it is reaching the Lesser Antilles.

Last year, there were 17 named storms, 10 hurricanes and six major hurricanes, including Hurricanes Irma and Maria which devastated some parts of the Caribbean. A tropical storm watch means that tropical storm conditions are possible within the watch area. It was moving west at 16 miles per hour.

Following Tropical Storm Alberto, which developed during Memorial Day weekend, there were no tropical storms over the Atlantic basin during June for the first time since 2014, AccuWeather reported. "Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 35 miles [55 km] from the center".
