Tropical Storm Chris about to lose its title

Tropical Storm Chris about to lose its title

In the tropics, Chris is forecast to become a hurricane Tuesday as it finally gets a nudge to the northeast away from the Carolina coast vicinity.

Wednesday's 11 a.m. advisory from the National Hurricane Center shows Chris sustaining 100 miles per hour winds, only 5 miles per hour slower than early Wednesday morning.

It was headed northeast at 22 miles per hour (35 kph), on track to brush past Canada's easternmost province and then hit Iceland this weekend.

Warm seas could add to Chriss strength today, according to the National Hurricane Centre, but the storm is predicted to weaken tomorrow, becoming a post-tropical cyclone. Total rain accumulations over Newfoundland are forecast to be from 1 to 3 inches (25 to 75 millimeters), with isolated amounts in the neighborhood of 6 inches (150 millimeters).

ExxonMobil removed some of its workers from offshore oil platforms Wednesday as hurricane Chris advanced toward Atlantic Canada. "Rain, strong winds and heavy pounding surf over coastal regions will end tonight". Chris will be this hybrid type of storm when it makes landfall in Newfoundland Thursday. These swells could cause life-threatening surf and rip current conditions.

Based on the current track, no interaction with land is expected.

The remnants of Hurricane Beryl are following the path of Hurricane Chris and could re-develop over the weekend, the National Hurricane Center reported Wednesday evening (July 11). It was located about 275 miles southwest of Cape Race, Newfoundland, and quickly moving northeast at 36 mph. Other than some rough seas along the East Coast, it poses no threat to the United States of America, the National Hurricane Center said.
