Trump Calls EU 'a Foe' Ahead of Putin Meeting

Trump Calls EU 'a Foe' Ahead of Putin Meeting

U.S. President Donald Trump gestures as he answers questions during a news conference before departing the NATO Summit in Brussels, Belgium, Thursday, July 12, 2018.

"America and the European Union are best friends", Tusk tweeted.

Scottish police say they are trying to trace a paraglider who flew a Greenpeace protest banner over the golf resort that President Donald Trump is staying at. "China is a foe economically, certainly they are a foe", President Trump began his answer.

In the interview, CBS News's Jeff Glor asked Trump what he considers his biggest foe globally, prompting Trump to lament the EU's trade policies.

Trump criticized Germany, as he had last week before a contentious North Atlantic Treaty Organisation summit in Brussels, for its deal with Russian Federation to build a natural gas pipeline in the Baltic Sea that will send send fuel from Russian Federation to Germany.

Trump downplayed the significance of these declarations, saying it "doesn't mean anything" to be a foe except to acknowledge that they "are competitive".

Trump added the European Union has "really taken advantage of us on trade" though this "does not mean that they are bad".

"Russia is a foe in certain respects. They want to do well and we want to do well", he added. "I respect the leaders of those countries", Trump said.

A trade war between China and the USA escalated last week after China imposed retaliatory tariffs on $34 billion of mostly U.S. agricultural products. You're supposed to be fighting for someone and then that someone gives billions of dollars to the one you're, you know, guarding against. "I think it's ridiculous". Trump will take part in a one-on-one summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Helsinki, Finland, on Monday.
