Watch the first Shazam trailer from Comic-Con 2018

Sandberg was on hand at Comic-Con to talk up the well-received Shazam! preview alongside stars Zachary Levi (Shazam/adult Billy Batson), Asher Angel (young Billy Batson), and Jack Dylan Grazer (Billy's pal Freddy).

Firmly set in the DC universe but with his own distinctly fun, family-centric tone, the screenplay is by Henry Gayden, story by Gayden and Darren Lemke.

Warner Bros. released a trailer for a very different kind of superhero movie from the studio-one that, appropriately, magically transformed all adults into gleeful little kids. Per canon, Shazam is one of the only characters who can stand toe-to-toe with Superman, Levi said.

Shazam! is the first of the DC Comics extended universe films to arrive next year, with Wonder Woman 1984 expected to hit theaters on November 1, 2019. With the abilities six mythological gods at his beck and call, Billy has to figure out his new superhero life, even as he delights in what he can do.

Played by Zachary Levi and Asher Angel, Shazam is basically a kid who transforms into a well-muscled, nearly invulnerable superhero by saying the magic word SHAZAM! "This is 14-year old me who got to put on spandex and a cape and fly around".

Mark Strong appears as the villainous Doctor Sivana, a villain who has had frequent run ins with Shazam in the comics. Still a kid at heart-inside a ripped, godlike body-Shazam revels in this adult version of himself by doing what any teen would do with superpowers: have fun with them! James Wan's Atlantean epic swims into theaters on December 21, ahead of Shazam!'s April 5, 2019 arrival. But he'll need to master these powers quickly in order to fight the deadly forces of evil controlled by Dr. Thaddeus Sivana'. Given the tone of how Warner Bros.is handling most D.C. comic book adaptations, this trailer feels like a proverbial breath of fresh air.

Billy Batson gets his powers when he utters "Shazam", with each letter of the word standing for a specific power.
