West Nile Virus found in mosquitoes in Ohio, Washington

"West Nile virus activity in the state is increasing", said CDPH director and state public health officer Karen Smith, MD, MPH in a recent press release.

The mosquitoes were collected off North Spring Court, near Campbell and Jupiter roads, according to Garland health officials.

In the most serious cases, West Nile virus can cause a form of potentially fatal meningitis.

The Health Department places the traps in 25 to 30 locations each week to collect specimens for testing, and now that Tulsa County experienced a positive test for West Nile, the county will take aggressive measures for controlling the mosquito population in the area.

This week, a trap location in Tulsa County confirmed that the sample of mosquitoes have the virus. Wear long-sleeved shirts and long trousers and use bug repellent with an active ingredient of DEET or picaridin.

Mosquitoes can be more than pesky insects.

DRAIN - Mosquitoes lay their eggs on standing water.

"The first West Nile virus positive mosquitoes of the season have been identified", said Dr. Philip Armstrong, Medical Entomologist at the CAES.

Which means, birds are the primary source of West Nile Virus. Always follow the product label instructions.

While 80 percent of the people infected suffer no symptoms, those who do commonly report headaches, fevers, muscle aches and extreme fatigue.

"Wearing clothes that cover you up, so long sleeves and trousers".

Be careful using repellent on the hands of children as it may irritate the eyes and mouth. The spray is not harmful to humans or pets and kills adult mosquitoes.

Treat standing water that can not be eliminated, such as retention ponds or drainage ditches, with a mosquito larvicide.

Avoid being outdoors from dusk to dawn, peak mosquito biting times, if possible.

Install or fix screens on windows and doors to keep mosquitoes out of the home.

People older than 50 are at greater risk of developing severe neurologic disease from West Nile infection.
