Zsa Zsa, the Anoka bulldog recently crowned the ‘World’s Ugliest Dog,’ dies

Zsa Zsa's owner, Megan Brainard, confirmed her death on Thursday telling CNN's sister network HLN that the 9-year-old English Bulldog died in her sleep.

A sad day in the world of dogs.

Megan told CNN then that the dog slobbered a lot because she had trouble keeping its tongue in its mouth. "Sweetest dog I've ever met". She lived life as an underdog, spending five years in a puppy mill before being rescued. The dog's owner Megan Brainard of Anoka, Minnesota, had received $1,500, a trophy and visit to NY for the win, reported USA Today.

It's kind of like when she won [the World's Ugliest Dog contest]. The hound was in good health and had been staying with Brainard's father, who woke up Tuesday to find she had passed, she said.

A news release announcing Zsa Zsa's victory in late June in Petaluma, California, said: "Nine years young with a swaggering tongue, Zsa Zsa delivered a shower of slobber as she claimed this year's title".

"I picked Zsa Zsa up and took her outside and laid her down in the grass", the pet owner shared. "We were all saying our goodbyes".

Brainard and the rest of Zsa Zsa's family hosted a ceremony for her in their back yard to honor the pup.
