Apple removes conspiracy theory personality Alex Jones from iTunes over hate speech

Apple removes conspiracy theory personality Alex Jones from iTunes over hate speech

Among the conspiracy theories Jones has peddled are charges that the United States government was behind numerous attacks, including the September 11, 2001 strikes on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon.

Jones now admits the shooting occurred but says his claims were free speech. He is seeking to have the cases dismissed.

Separately, Facebook said it had removed four pages operated by Jones and Infowars after receiving new complaints about their content.

On Monday, Mark Zuckerberg's tech titan upped the ante and removed the episodes permanently. When Facebook banned Jones earlier today, it cited rules against hate speech and violent content.

Another one of the big five tech companies has turned on Alex Jones. Online sentiment had been building against Spotify for days after subscribers found the episodes' listing on the service.

An Apple spokeswoman said in a statement that the company "does not tolerate hate speech" and publishes guidelines that developers and publishers must follow. In a blog post Monday, the social-networking platform said it removed four of Jones's pages for violating its community standards. Only one InfoWars podcast, a news recap called "Real News with David Knight", remains available via the Apple podcast app.

However, Breitbart News noted Facebook removed Jones for using "dehumanizing language" and "glorifying violence" rather than "false news". War Room and the Alex Jones Show podcast were also scrubbed from their service. YouTube took down four videos from the Infowars channel, which was also slapped with a 90-day suspension from live-streaming.

Pinterest also removed the InfoWars account. But a YouTube spokesperson told CNN that "When users violate ... policies repeatedly, like our policies against hate speech and harassment or our terms prohibiting circumvention of our enforcement measures, we terminate their accounts".

Infowars accounts are still active on Twitter because they now don't violate Twitter's policies, according to a person familiar with the company's thinking. "Its good to see companies step up when people so flagrantly propagate falsehoods".

Similarly, Spotify said that it had now removed all of Jones's Infowars programs from its platform, after last week removing some programs. "They blew it all away in the middle of the night". It's likely that neither Facebook nor YouTube would have 86'd Jones on their own, neither wanting to be the lone target of criticism from the alt-right crowd howling about Jones's First Amendment rights.

Infowars responded by accusing the companies of censorship. He's not a conservative. What conservative news outlet will be next?

"It's just the beginning", Bozell said in a statement.

"So there's no way the censors can get between us", he said.

"We've been banned completely on Facebook, Apple, & Spotify".

"We believe banning these Pages would be contrary to the basic principles of free speech", Facebook posted in response to a question from CNN reporter Oliver Darcy, who had been pressing the company on why it continued to allow "Infowars" on its platform.
