Arsenal boss Emery: Aubameyang can win Golden Boot

New Arsenal boss Unai Emery could start Danny Welbeck at left-back against current champions Manchester City as the Gunners' first choice full-backs Nacho Monreal and Saed Kolasinac are out injured for this afternoon's game.

The Gunners were second best for long spells of the season opener, with goals from Raheem Sterling and Bernardo Silva condemning Emery to defeat in his first competitive match in charge.

"Many players did a sacrifice, Stones, Walker, we trained for only one week but the spirit is there". In this precise fixture last season, there were whole areas in the stands that appeared empty.

Speaking at his pre-game press conference on Friday, Emery spoke about his optimism for the season. "No-one can deny it is complicated, so to win the way we won is more than pleasing". "Manchester City have given me a fantastic squad".

And Guardiola twisted the knife by insisting City are still some way from their peak.

Asked how much motivation his players have, Guardiola said: "It is not a question that needs an answer".

Guardiola said of his fellow Spaniard: "No advice (from me) - I think he has enough experience to know exactly (what to do)". They show me on the green stuff (the pitch).

"I know exactly what we did to achieve that and we start from there. We are a strong team, after that we will see".

One difference for City this season is the presence of Benjamin Mendy at left-back.

Speaking ahead of his side's opening game at Arsenal, Guardiola said: "We were the best, definitely, no doubts about that, but we don't play alone".

"Mendy has a lot of things to improve". We'll do our effort to make him feel we count on him - and we do count on him.

In this first matchday, fans will be treated to the league's first titanic clash of the year as Arsenal hosts Manchester City from the Emirates.

Alexandre Lacazette also starts from the bench, with Mesut Özil and Henrikh Mkhitaryan supporting Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in a front three.

"Today is the first step".

"We do work on different formations in training". Manchester City were sensational as they cruised to the title last season, amassing 100 points and smashing seemingly every possible record. The same when we are thinking defensively, I want our strikers to be thinking: "We need to protect the goalkeepers".

DF Sokratis Papastathopoulos, 6 - A taxing if not eye-catching debut for the Greek worldwide, who was booked for a cynical foul that suggested he might yet prove to be the kind of no-nonsense centre-half Arsenal need. This process is normal.

The Spaniard will need time to reshape the team and, given the warm applause from numerous home fans still in Emirates Stadium by the final whistle, the majority of supporters are encouraged enough to afford it.
