Asked how much motivation his players have, Guardiola said: "It is not a question that needs an answer".

Attempting to become the first team since Manchester United in 2009 to retain the title, the champions were good value with goals by Raheem Stirling and Bernardo Silva.

Like Arsenal, Manchester City have a few injuries at the start of the Premier League season.

Manchester City laid down a marker to their title rivals with a comfortable 2-0 win against Arsenal, prompting manager Pep Guardiola to claim he was "privileged" to manage the Premier League champions. "We've played a massive game today, Arsenal, we just need to get them out of the way one by one, not worry about (other) results, we've got to concentrate on our three points".

"I said to him when he [Welbeck] arrived with us after the holidays, I want the best performance in his career from this player - and to work for that", he said.

"With more time we will play with this personality".

Emery, meanwhile, will know he has much to do, even before a hard derby with Chelsea next weekend. "I've got to keep improving and getting more goals".

They need to be positive going forward, and be very assured in possession. "We want to give him confidence", stated Emery during his pre-match press conference.

The England winger showed the more pleasing side of his game with an incisive burst past Shkodran Mustafi that took him into the Arsenal area and ended with Petr Cech saving his rising drive. "He has this experience for continuing to defend our goal", Emery said.

That won't be expected this year as Arsenal could potentially be a force, particularly if Lucas Torreira adds that defensive bite to the midfield and Stephan Lichtsteiner adds his voice of authority to the changing room.

Emery said he did not know the status of Maitland-Niles' injury, but said Monreal could be ready to face Chelsea at Stamford Bridge next weekend.
