California's desolating Carr Fire was started by a flat tire

California's desolating Carr Fire was started by a flat tire

The fire is moving into grass and timberlands where it will be more hard to control, fire behavior analyst Don Boursier told the Los Angeles Times.

The declaration makes federal funding available to individuals and business owners in Shasta County for temporary housing and home repairs, losses on uninsured property and other recovery programs, the White House said in a statement.

More than 14,000 firefighters are now battling 17 major fires burning across California.

This year, California wildfires have burned more land earlier in the "fire season" than usual, said Ken Pimlott, Cal Fire director, during a news conference on Saturday.

"The president has been pretty good about helping us out in disasters, so I'm hopeful", Brown said.

The blaze in Mendocino County, about 90 miles (145 km) north of San Francisco, had spread to cover a total of 201,471 acres (81,500 hectares) by early Saturday, after increasing more than 25 percent in size from Friday, the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (Cal Fire) said.

Both areas remained under a "red flag warning" issued by the National Weather Service for strong winds, low relative humidity and temperatures topping 32C (90F). They have forced the evacuation of more than 20,000 residents and destroyed more than 100 structures. As a precaution, new evacuations were called Friday for an area of Mendocino and Lake counties where the week-old twin fires are threatening about 9,000 homes.

The River Fire, where this video of air tanker was taken, has burned through 42,200 acres and is about 50 percent contained.

The Sacramento Bee, citing Cal Fire, reported that more than 14,000 firefighters were battling 17 blazes across the state.

"These kinds of disgusting situations bring people together, regardless of the lesser kind of ideologies and partisan considerations", Brown told a news conference Saturday.

Cal Fire said on August 3 that the Ranch Fire, which is burning northeast of Ukiah, had consumed about 115,250 acres since it started on July 27, with firefighters managing to contain about 28 percent of the blaze.

Two firefighters have been killed there since a fire erupted just west of Yosemite in the Sierra National Forest.

But tens of thousands of others were still under evacuation orders. Hughes was killed July 29 by a falling tree while fighting the wildfire that has closed Yosemite National Park at the height of tourist season. Workers who live in Yosemite's popular Valley region were ordered to leave Friday because of inaccessible roads.

More than 13,000 firefighters are battling blazes statewide with the help of crews from as far away as Florida.

"New fires will grow rapidly out of control, in some cases people may not be able to evacuate safely in time should a fire approach", the weather service said in its bulletin for the Mendocino area north of San Francisco.
