Confirmation hearings for US top court nominee Kavanaugh open September 4

Confirmation hearings for US top court nominee Kavanaugh open September 4

If Brett Kavanaugh was fit to be on the Supreme Court, Senate Republicans would have no issue releasing his full records.

The Senate Judiciary Committee announced on Friday that it will hold its confirmation hearing for Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh early next month. Sen. "Judge Kavanaugh looks forward to addressing the Judiciary Committee in public hearings for the American people to view", White House spokesman Raj Shah said in a statement Friday following the announcement.

"He's a mainstream judge".

"My team has already reviewed every page of the over 4,800 pages of judicial opinions Judge Kavanaugh wrote, over 6,400 pages of opinions he joined, more than 125,000 pages of records produced from his White House legal service, and over 17,000 pages in response to the most comprehensive questionnaire ever submitted to a nominee", Grassley said.

But Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer, who has promised to fight Kavanaugh's nomination, said in a statement that Republicans were in a "mad rush" to hold hearings after deciding to block almost all of Kavanaugh's records from public release. It is the first records from the National Archives released as part of the confirmation process. "It's time for the American people to hear directly from Judge Kavanaugh at his public hearing", Grassley said in his statement announcing the hearing.

With the U.S. Supreme Court building in the background, Supreme Court nominee judge Brett Kavanaugh arrives prior to meeting with Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell on Capitol Hill in Washington, U.S., July 10, 2018. More sessions with Democrats are expected to be held in the coming weeks.

Democrats have accused Republicans of trying to rush the confirmation process.

Kavanaugh needs just 50 votes to be confirmed.

July 27: Senate Judiciary Chairman Chuck Grassley requests only the documents from Kavanaugh's time as White House Counsel and did not request any documents from Kavanaugh' three years as White House Staff Secretary.

Democrats, led by Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer of NY and Sen. Dianne Feinstein, the top Democrat on the Judiciary Committee. Democrats have complained Republicans are rushing the process for the lifetime appointment without proper vetting of Kavanaugh's record. Senators are scheduled to question Kavanaugh on September 5.

"Republican efforts to make this the least transparent, most secretive Supreme Court nomination in history continue", Schumer said.

Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, released a statement on Friday calling Kavanaugh "exceptionally well-qualified" and "a fair arbiter of the law". "They seem to be more frightened of this nominee's record and history than any we've ever considered".
