Dallas resident is county's first West Nile death of 2018

Residents are reminded to protect themselves against mosquito bites to avoid West Nile virus.

The Allegheny County Health Department will treat for mosquitoes in several Pittsburgh neighborhoods where they have tested positive for West Nile Virus. No other details about the victim were released.

There was one human case of West Nile virus in Oxford County in 2017.

Last year, 26 people contracted the virus and two died in Dallas County. But some cases can worsen to include swelling of the brain.

Most people infected with the virus have no symptoms at all, or they have flu-like symptoms such as fever, headache, body aches and fatigue.

Use insect repellent containing DEET when outside. The majority of Culex mosquitoes breed in standing water and others are found in freshwater and saltwater marshes, lakes and ponds.

Drain any standing water in your yard.

Limit outdoor activities during dawn and dusk, when mosquitoes are most active.

Health officials say the patient was infected with the more serious neuroinvasive form of the disease.
