Doctor 'satisfied' with Lauda condition

"During the following days his condition has further improved continuously".

Klepetko said the usual recovery period for such a procedure is two to three weeks, but explained that 69-year-old Lauda's recovery period will be "a longer time" due to his age.

Lauda is also very active in aviation - in January he bought back his old airline Niki, renaming it LaudaMotion but going on to sell a majority stake to Irish low-priced operator Ryanair two months later.

Mercedes boss Toto Wolff has wished Niki Lauda a safe and speedy recovery following his lung surgery on Thursday.

Usually a regular presence in the Grand Prix paddocks around the world with Mercedes, where he's non-executive chairman, Lauda had missed the Hockenheim race on July 22 and the Hungary event the week after because of his illness.

"The world knows Niki as an F1 legend with incredible power and resilience", Wolff, also Austrian, said Friday in a message before the August factory shutdown.

"For all of us at Mercedes he is our chairman, our mentor and our friend".

Lauda won the Formula One championships in 1975, 1977 and 1984, before launching careers as an aviation entrepreneur, motorsport manager and television commentator.

"Send you all my love, prayers and support, Niki", Hamilton wrote on Instagram.

In 1976, Lauda was involved in a huge crash as he went into an embankment at the Nurburgring circuit in Germany.
