Europe sees sharp rise in measles: 41,000 cases, 37 deaths

More than 41,000 measles cases have been recorded across Europe in the first six months of 2018 - higher than any year since 2010 - according to the World Health Organisation (WHO). There have been no deaths from measles associated with this outbreak to date.

Fifteen European region countries, including the United Kingdom, had large outbreaks.

"To prevent measles and other risky diseases from spreading, high coverage of is needed".

"Over 10 % of people aged 20-40 have not undergone the vaccination yet", Imnadze stressed, noting a vaccination campaign has been underway for over a year and a half.

"Measles can be a serious illness and is highly infectious", said Dr Ruth McDermott, public health doctor.

The alarming rise there is likely caused by a mix of migrant displacement and also lingering but incorrect concerns about the MMR vaccine causing autism, Professor Julie Leask, a vaccine expert, told me this week. "In the case of measles, the coverage in every community needs to be at least 95 per cent with two doses of the measles-containing vaccine to prevent outbreaks and eliminate the disease", he said.

"We are seeing a dramatic increase in infections and extended outbreaks", Zsuzsanna Jakab, WHO regional director for Europe, said in a statement.

"We can stop this deadly disease".

The overall risk of measles to the United Kingdom population is low, but due to ongoing measles outbreaks in Europe, cases in unimmunised individuals and limited onward spread can occur.

At the end of January 2018, there were 51 confirmed cases in the West Midlands. A dose given before 12 months of age does not replace the dose that would normally be given at 12 months. To prevent large outbreaks, it said at least 95 percent immunization coverage is required. In the United Kingdom, coverage was 91.6% among young children in 2016-17.

Dr Mary Ramsay, head of immunisations at PHE, said universities were "hotspots" for the spread of measles and other highly infectious diseases with freshers particularly at risk.

Why are measles rates so high?

World Health Organization said that it is working closely with member states now facing outbreaks to implement response measures, including enhanced routine and supplemental immunization as well as heightened surveillance to quickly detect cases. They say a lack of coverage increases the risk of the virus spreading when it is brought in from overseas.

The previous highest annual total was 23,927 cases in 2017.

In recent years, a loose group of campaigners against vaccinations, dubbed the anti-vax movement, has dissuaded Italians from opting in to immunisations by citing supposed risks.

This law is one of the key issues in the upcoming March 4 elections and some people are calling for it to be scrapped.

Ukraine had more cases in June 2018 than the whole of a year ago.
