Ex Trump campaign chief found guilty

The president expressed disappointment about the outcome.

"It has nothing to do with Russian collusion, we continue the witch hunt", Trump said. They started out, looking for Russians involved in our campaign.

The outcome, though not the across-the-board guilty verdicts the prosecutors sought, nearly certainly guarantees years of prison for Manafort. His first indictment, filed in the U.S. District Court in the District of Columbia in October 2017, charged him with conspiracy, money laundering, tax fraud, failure to file reports of foreign financial assets, serving as an unregistered foreign agent and giving false and misleading statements under the Foreign Agents Registration Act.

Witnesses included Manafort's former deputy, Rick Gates, who testified for two and a half days. Gates was the star prosecution witness and defense lawyers depicted him as a liar and embezzler.

Prosecutors say he hid some $60 million in foreign income from when he acted as a political adviser in Ukraine. He was convicted of defrauding Citizens Bank of US$3.4 million and Banc of California of US$1 million. They were hung on three other related counts.

Nearly simultaneously, across the Potomac, in Alexandria, Virginia, Manafort was convicted of eight felony counts of bank and tax fraud, though a mistrial was declared on 10 more.

Manafort faces up to 305 years in prison if convicted on all charges.

In a note passed to Ellis, the jury asked: "If we can not come to consensus on a single count.what does that mean for the final verdict?" But attorneys for Manafort suggested that Mueller's team had improperly ensnared their client in its probe, as the case did not have anything to do with Russia's interference in the 2016 election. But the jury seems to have considered the evidence carefully. Trump says Manafort's case "does not involve me".

Manafort worked on the Trump campaign from March 2016 to August 2016 and had previously worked on the presidential campaigns of Gerald Ford, Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush and Bob Dole.

"I must tell you that Paul Manafort is a good man", the president said, "he was with Ronald Reagan, he was with a lot of different people over the years".

The trial carries major implications for the future of Mueller's investigation.

Some members of the jury seem determined to look at him for the first time and really stare at him as the guilty verdicts were read.

His lawyers had argued that Gates, not Manafort, was the real criminal, pointing to Gates' admitted lies, theft, and infidelity.

When the consulting work dried up, he lied on loan applications in order to maintain his cash flow, they said.

Prosecutors say Manafort made more than $60 million consulting in the Ukraine for politicians who were backed by Russian Federation. When he advised Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych and his Party of Regions, those businessmen paid for his work by moving millions into shell companies in Cyprus, jurors heard.
