Explosion reported near Italys Bologna airport

The explosion was caused by an accident involving a truck transporting flammable substances, the AP report said citing Italian news agency ANSA.

Bologna is the historic capital of the Emilia-Romagna region, in northern Italy.

More than a dozen people were seriously injured, local media said.

Video on social media showed the tanker bursting into a huge mushroom cloud of orange flames and a thick plume of black smoke pouring into the sky.

The blast was triggered when the tanker truck collided with another truck, and that caused a partial collapse of the flyover onto a road below.

A huge gaping hole could be seen in the raised highway next to the tanker as the fire raged.

The crash sparked a fire, eventually causing the highly-pressurized tank to explode as first responders arrived to clear the scene.

A massive explosion was reported near Bologna airport in Northern Italy.

Carabinieri said the force of the explosion blew out windows on their barracks, injuring some officers with flying glass.

"Circulation compromised, not only on the motorway, but also in the Borgo Panigale area".

Firefighters have extinguished the blaze and begun to investigate why it happened.
