Facebook, Instagram roll out new tools to manage time online

It's appropriate, then, that Facebook - owner of two of the biggest social networking apps, Instagram and, well, Facebook - is trying to do something about it.

Obviously, neither Facebook nor Instagram will cut you off once you've reached your self-imposed limit. Our hope is that these tools give people more control over the time they spend on our platforms.

On Facebook, you can control those tools in a new section of the settings called "Your Time on Facebook".

Facebook says the tools were developed in collaboration with mental health experts and organisations, academics, Facebook's extensive research, and feedback from its community.

"Facebook and Instagram state they want to ensure their platforms are safe but to do so they need to tackle serious problems within their sites", Laura Randall, associate head of online child safety for Britain's National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children, said.

Facebook and Instagram are to introduce tools to help users manage their time on the social networks, Facebook has announced.

As per the announcement, the tools will soon be rolled out for the users. You think you're spending too much time on Facebook and Instagram?

People will also be able to see bar charts showing the amount of time spent in the app over a week-long period, along with a daily average.

There's a dashboard with some usage stats, breaking down how much time you've spent in the apps over the last week.

Lastly, you can also use this page to mute any and all push notifications for 15 minutes, 1 hour, 2 hours, 4 hours, or 8 hours.

The features will only be available on the mobile app, although Ranadive said that they may consider releasing the features for other devices in the future.

According to a 2017 report by the Australian Psychological Society, Australians spend 950 hours a year (over 18 hours a week) on social media.

First, for Instagram: Open up your Settings, and scroll down to the new option "Your Activity".
