Facebook launches AR games for Messenger video chat

The social media company said users of financial firms such as PayPal (PYPL.O), Citibank (C.N) and American Express (AXP.N) could link their financial accounts with Facebook's Messenger and chat with a customer service representative.

The games can be found in the latest version of the Messenger app by starting a video chat and tapping the star button. The company had recently introduced the video chat feature for its Messenger.

They explained: The message included a video link and read: 'Hey I saw this video.

There are two games that will initially be available for users to plan with more set to be released soon. When someone cracks a smile, a filter distorts their facial expression, and an animated sun pops up indicating who won.

While the AR game Don't smile is the virtual interpretation of the ultimate staring game, the Asteroid attack game requires users to guide a spaceship through their nose while avoiding obstacles.

Messenger also promised that more games will be out in the following weeks or months, including "Beach Bump", where you pass a beach ball back and forth, and "Kitten Kraze" with matching cats.

So what are the new games on the Messenger app and how can you play them?

These features are all about increasing engagement and grabbing more market share in the messaging space.

It seems like Facebook are striving to go back to their roots as a social platform with the capacity to bring people together. "Its new features are created to get and keep attention ... and are about more utility, more entertainment and more time spent".

Up to six people will be able to play competitive games, using expressions and facial movements to interact with and control the AR elements. "There's a lot of attention and time spent [in games]".

Facebook is looking to expand into financial services and has reportedly asked several USA banks for customer information as part of a move to build out its Messenger application, the Wall Street Journal reported.
