Facebook Removes Alex Jones And InfoWars Pages

Apple has removed the American conspiracy theorist Alex Jones from its podcast directory, in the most significant move yet by a major technology company against the broadcaster.

"Since then, more content from the same Pages has been reported to us - upon review, we have taken it down for glorifying violence, which violates our graphic violence policy, and using dehumanizing language to describe people who are transgender, Muslims and immigrants, which violates our hate speech policies", Facebook wrote in its blog post. Last week, Facebook removed four videos on four of Jones' pages for violating its hate speech and bullying policies, according to a statement put out by the media platform.

Jones is a conservative radio host and conspiracy theorist who, among other things, claimed the 2012 Sandy Hook elementary school massacre was a hoax.

Several other apps and social media platforms have also taken action against InfoWars content.

This is a developing story.

Facebook emphasized that it hasn't technically removed the pages but simply unpublished them, which leaves the door open for an appeal by Jones.

"While much of the discussion around InfoWars has been related to false news. none of the violations that spurred today's removals were related to this", it said in a statement.

Apple told Buzzfeed that it had removed the entire library for five of Jones's six Infowars podcasts including the shows "War Room" and the daily "The Alex Jones Show".

The theories he has promoted include that the September 11, 2001 attacks on NY and Washington were staged by the United States government.

Jones has also claimed that the September 11, 2001 attacks on NY and Washington were staged by the U.S. government. "We believe in representing a wide range of views, so long as people are respectful to those with differing opinions", an Apple spokesperson said in a statement to TechCrunch.

InfoWars did not immediately respond to a request for comment sent outside business hours. "Podcasts that violate these guidelines are removed from our directory making them no longer searchable or available for download or streaming". YouTube took down four videos from the Infowars channel, which was also slapped with a 90-day suspension from live-streaming. "Due to repeated violations of Spotify's prohibited content policies, The Alex Jones Show has lost access to the Spotify platform".

It's unclear exactly how many episodes were ditched, although the vast majority of content created by Jones remains available to Spotify users.
