First Look At Liu Yifei In Disney's Mulan

The first image has been released of star Liu Yifei in character - poised for action and looking exactly like you'd expect Mulan to look in real life.

New Zealand Film Commission head of incentives Catherine Bates confirmed that the majority of the shoot would be taking place on our shores, with it's base at Auckland's Kumeu Studios. "It will be extremely muscular and thrilling and entertaining and moving", the film's director, Niki Caro, who helmed last year's "The Zookeeper's Wife", told MovieFone about her vision for the film.

Disney's live-action Mulan is officially in production.

Mulan is the epic adventure of a fearless young woman who masquerades as a man in order to fight Northern Invaders attacking China.

Joining her in the film are martial arts superstar Donnie Yen (Ip Man, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story), iconic Chinese actress Gong Li (Memoirs Of A Geisha) and martial arts veteran Jet Li (Shaolin Temple, Lethal Weapon 4).

Disney will release three other live-action films before Mulan, including this year's Christopher Robin (Winnie The Pooh) and Mary Poppins Returns and next year, Kim Possible, following the success of Beauty And The Beast and The Jungle Book.

In the photo, actress Liu Yifei is wearing a red robe and holding a sword.

Mulan is due in cinemas in March 2020.

While most fans remain excited for the remake, some are growing uneasy as it appears that the adaption may significantly stray from its animated source material, not featuring any songs or Mushu.
