First Star Wars: Episode 9 Image Released From Set As Production Begins

In his tweet, Abrams stated that it was "bittersweet" to start Episode IX without Fisher but paid tribute to his "extraordinary cast and crew".

This is how director J.J. Abrams inaugurated the first day of filming Star Wars: Episode IX.

Blending emotion with practicality (and a nice shout-out to The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson), it's the first image from behind the scenes of the next main chapter film, though it's tough to tell exactly what we're looking at besides film equipment. With franchise newcomers Naomi Ackie and Richard E. Grant joining an impressive returning cast that includes Mark Hamill and Billy Dee Williams, Abrams will bring to a close the Skywalker saga that began in 1977. It looks to be the interior of the Millennium Falcon, but who's in the chair next to Finn? Grateful for @rianjohnson and special thanks to George Lucas for creating this incredible world and beginning a story of which we are lucky to be a part.

Abrams shared a lot of set photos and videos during the production of The Force Awakens that revealed absolutely nothing, but also gave fans something to enjoy, so it'll be interesting to see if he does the same on Episode IX or if this thing's on total lockdown.

Star Wars - Episode IX hit theatres December 20, 2019.

"With the support and blessing from her daughter, Billie [Lourd], we have found a way to honor Carrie's legacy and role as Leia in "Episode IX" by using unseen footage we shot together in 'Episode VII, '" continued Abrams, who co-wrote the script with Chris Terrio.
