Google is releasing the finished version of Android Pie today

The Pixel phones have been widely praised for their photographic capability but, perhaps more importantly, they are also at the forefront of any Android updates.

There is no shortage of delicious treats and elaborate desserts starting with the letter P, but after going down the commercial brand route past year with Oreo, and snubbing fan favorite Nutella to choose the less liked Nougat back in 2016, Google has made a decision to keep things simple (and vague) for the all-new Android 9 Pie version.

As far as highlights go, we've known pretty much what to expect since Google I/O back in May, with features like Adaptive Battery and Adaptive Brightness at the top of the changelog in terms of importance and impact on battery life and energy efficiency.

In Android's long dessert-themed history, I'm not sure that there's been a name as generic as "pie". It does come with support for a few gestures that are similar to what we have seen in the iPhone X. But despite keeping the same material design - now whiter and flatter - it is definitely a bigger release than the Android 8 was compared to the Android 7. Swiping up from below brings up the app selection menu and swiping from the bottom to the right takes you to a multitasking screen where you can switch between whatever apps you might have open. This is a quick way to get from the beta to stable Android 9.

Google Pixel 3, Pixel 3 XL Launch Reportedly Set for October 4
Google Pixel 3 release date revealed in extraordinary leak

An app timer is kind of like parental controls, but for yourself, because you can't stop using your smartphone? It crunches a bunch of data based on your past actions and then makes it easier to repeat those actions later.

The Google Pixel 3 XL will probably feature a display notch, while the Pixel 3 will not, but its bezels will be a bit thicker because of it.

The new recent apps.
