Hundreds evacuated from homes in Lynchburg over possible dam failure

Because of the torrential rainfall, residents of the city's threatened areas were evacuated to a local school, which was converted into a shelter, during a two hour period Thursday beginning at 8pm, the News & Advance reported.

A failure of the College Lake Dam near Lynchburg could flood the city with five metres of water in seven minutes, news outlets reported Thursday evening, citing statements from the National Weather Service (NSW). This includes the following streams and drainages: James River, Blackwater Creek, Williams Run and Ivy Creek. The city knew the dam couldn't handle 2 feet of rain, the maximum it was supposed to be able to cope with, Perrow says.

Piper Van De Perre, the spokeswoman for the city's Department of Emergency Services, told CNN affiliate WDBJ-TV early Friday morning that crews were targeting a list of 124 homes for evacuation that are at imminent threat of dam breach.

Firemen waded through flood waters on Thursday in Lynchburg.

A flash flood watch is in effect in the area until 11 a.m. There is also the prospect of stronger storms developing in the afternoon, which could lead to isolated wind damage.

Forecasters say the area has received 3 to 6 inches of rain this week.

Officials have warned residents not to drive down flooded streets, adding that the floodwater may contain debris.

Hundreds of people have been evacuated in Virginia after a National Weather Service (NWS) warning sparked fears of a dam burst. The lake behind it is filled with silt, which complicates potential solutions - if they removed the dam, for instance, they would need to ensure that the silt didn't cause other problems downstream.
