Imran Khan defeats Shahbaz to become Pakistan’s new Prime Minister

Imran Khan defeats Shahbaz to become Pakistan’s new Prime Minister

Khan received 176 votes in the 342-seat National Assembly, said Asad Qaiser, the speaker of the parliament.

Imran Khan, the in-waiting prime minister, has planned to change the chiefs of Federal Board of Revenue, NEPRA, Railways, Pakistan International Airlines and other institutions.

After Khan secured the most seats in the Pakistan general elections, he extended invitations to multiple Indian cricketers to attend his swearing-in ceremony.

For any candidate to become the next Prime Minister of Pakistan, a simple majority of votes from the total strength of the 330-member house is required.

He was jailed in the lead-up to the vote, and his brother, Shahbaz Sharif, led the PML-N party into the election.

Meanwhile, Imran Khan will take oath as Prime Minister at a ceremony at Aiwan-e-Sadr in Islamabad Saturday morning.

Sharif, the 66-year-old younger brother of jailed former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, served as the chief minister of the politically crucial Punjab province from 2013 to 2018.

The voting was held in open through division of members in different galleries designated for different candidates. He became PML-N president after his elder brother was barred from holding the top party position and public posts.

According to sources, Pakistan People's Party chairman Bilawal Bhutto and his father and former Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari said that the party would neither extend support to Mr Khan nor to Mr Sharif in the election.
