Income was disguised to help Manafort, tax preparer says

Receipts from Alan Couture show that Manafort spent $15,000 on an ostrich leather jacket, $9,500 on an ostrich vest, and $18,500 on a python skin coat.

"I honestly believed that the bank would have to vet the document themselves", LaPorta said when asked why she sent the document she knew was "false", adding that she felt she was protected since she did not create the letter. The prosecution has pressed that Manafort made false financial representations in order to obtain loans from banks. Manafort briefly managed President Donald Trump's election campaign in 2016. The trial entered its fourth day with more testimony about Mr. Manafort's suspicious financial transactions in the first trial to be brought by special counsel Robert Mueller's Russian Federation investigation.

During another series of questions and exhibits offered into evidence, Laporta described a conference call between herself and Rick Gates during which another member of KWC - Connor O'Brian - also allegedly took part.

One email from Washkuhn to Manafort said $120,000 was "urgently needed for your personal bills".

Other witnesses testifying this week said Manafort paid them millions from the offshore accounts tied to foreign shell companies for landscaping, expensive clothing and even a Karaoke machine.

Manafort's lawyer maintained his client wasn't responsible for the series of maneuvers that led to felony charges of bank fraud and tax evasion, as well as other alleged financial chicanery committed in the service of laundering the millions Manafort received for his political consulting for Ukrainian oligarchs.

The testimony, on the fourth day of the trial, comes as prosecutors try to prove that Manafort knowingly violated tax and bank laws related to his political work overseas. "He approved every penny of everything we paid", Washkuhn told jurors.

She walked the court through what the yearly profit and loss statements her company prepared for Manafort's DMP should have looked like. But the income statements that DMP provided to the banks that gave it loans were rife with misspellings, used different fonts and headers, omitted corporate disclaimers and left out some numbers the bookkeeper would have included.

Witnesses told his trial for bank fraud and tax evasion that he personally wired the money in worldwide transfers to his accounts in order to hide it from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) - the USA government body responsible for tax.

She also sent letters to banks noting that Manafort anticipated a $2.4 million payment by November 2016 for work in Ukraine.

Manafort emailed Laporta in December 2015 telling her he was applying for a mortgage from Citizen Bank for a property located on Howard Street in Manhattan. "Manafort was the only client who paid with worldwide wire transfers", said Mr. Katzman. Manafort was the store's only customer to pay for suits using wire transfers from foreign accounts.

When they appeared, the bookkeeper and accountants said, they thought the companies were clients or, in some cases, lenders. Manafort has pleaded not guilty.

A pattern has emerged in numerous witness' testimonies at Manafort's trial this week. Ayliff testified Thursday that although Manafort was provided an outlet to disclose foreign bank accounts, he did not do so. In truth, she said, she was anxious that the loan did not exist and was instead a ploy to lower Manafort's tax bill.

Defense attorneys have signaled they will seek to blame the financial charges against Manafort on his business partner, Rick Gates, who was Trump's deputy campaign chairman in the 2016 presidential election.

Defense attorney Jay Nanavati asked him if Regolizio would call the document a "fake invoice".

Earlier Friday, another of Manafort's accountants took the stand, and a prosecutor asked him who among Manafort's circle was in charge of financial decisions.

Regolizio said he did not know Kilimnik.
