Iran snubs offer of a meeting by Trump

US sanctions targeting Iranian trade in automobiles, gold and other key metals will be re-imposed on Monday, while sanctions targeting the country's energy and banking sector will resume November 4.

But unlike Moscow, Tehran denies sending professional forces and instead says it has only provided military advisors and organised brigades made up of volunteers.

Officials have urged Iranian citizens to remain calm and to hold out through the rough times promised by Washington, noting that the country will weather the latest storm wrought by Trump and his apparently "regime change"-focused administration of pro-Israeli, pro-Saudi hawks".

Over the weekend, Trump once again floated the idea of meeting, tweeting "I will meet, or not meet, it doesn't matter - it is up to them!"

The White House on Monday is scheduled to announce the reimposition of tough economic sanctions on Iran, the first batch of sanctions to be revived since President Trump broke with the landmark Iran nuclear deal. Other signatories to the 2015 deal - including European countries, China and Russian Federation - have said they will try to keep it afloat.

"The problem is: What next?" one of the European diplomats said, referring to concerns that the U.S.is eyeing regime change as the sanctions' end goal. Newsweek quoted him as saying, "If the Iranians demonstrate a commitment to make fundamental changes in how they treat their own people, reduce their malign behavior, can agree that it's worthwhile to enter into a nuclear agreement that actually prevents proliferation, then the president said he's prepared to sit down and have the conversation with them".

Even the temptation of President Trump's offer of unconditional negotiations with Tehran was officially left unanswered, as the two major factions in the regime struggle for power. The strait at the mouth of the Persian Gulf is crucial to global energy supplies as about a third of all oil traded at sea passes through it.

In the absence of any involvement by the Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the hard-liners fear that the current government, with the aim of improving relations with the USA, and with the support of the public, will end the IRGC's advantages and completely change the path of the Islamic republic.

The agency reported all protests had taken place without official permission and were subsequently broken up by police.

Another video showed heavy police presence and road blocks in the city of Karaj, west of Tehran, which has been the scene of daily protests.

The authenticity of the videos could not immediately be verified. Authorities said by early evening, all protesters had dispersed.

The U.S. State Department said on its Persian-language Twitter account: "While it is ultimately up to the #people_of_Iran to determine their country's path, #America supports the voice of the Iranian people, which has been ignored for a long time".
