Longest Lunar Eclipse Of The Century: Blood Moon Shined Like Never Before

The 2018 lunar eclipse will last 20 minutes longer than the last lunar eclipse, which occurred on January 31st and lasted 1 hour and 16 minutes. This month, Mars will be at its closest to Earth since 2003.

But Begley doesn't think the world is going to end the night of Friday, July 27 which other end times' theorists have claimed.

At least 200 people flocked to Observatory Hill in Sydney's CBD, and also to Dover Heights in the east, as the moon moved into the Earth's shadow, becoming darker and turning redder as sunlight passed through Earth's atmosphere. Additionally, Mars and the sun will be on exact opposite sides of the Earth and will shine its best.

Because blue and violet wavelengths are scattered more than red and orange ones, more of the red wavelengths reach the moon, making the moon appear red.

The eclipse will be visible in parts of Australia, Asia, Africa, South America and Europe. In Johannesburg, residents took advantage of the clear winter night and watched the reddish shadow slide up the moon's surface.

As a total lunar eclipse, the Aquarius full blood moon is also known by some Native American tribes as the "Full Buck Moon", since it is around this time of year that new antlers begin to push up through a young buck's forehead. The rare phenomenon of the longest 'blood moon' eclipse will be visible in India as well.

Update, July 27, 3:27 p.m. PT.: Adds additional information on the lunar eclipse and when the next blood moon will be visible.

As the space agency further explained, the red planet will be at its brightest from July 27 to July 30, meaning you can likely simply go outside, look up, and get a great view of our neighboring planet with the naked eye.

But if it's not visible in North America, how can you get a glimpse of today's lunar eclipse?

In the United Kingdom lots of places were very cloudy, making the blood moon very hard to see.

The eclipsed moon glows in the predawn sky on December 21, 2010, in this view from Stedman, N.C.

"Every couple of years or so, the Earth overtakes Mars on the inside as it orbits the Sun, so Mars is closest to us".
