LOOK UP: Perseid Meteor Shower Peaks This Weekend

With the moon in a new phase, the sky will remain exceptionally dark when between 70 and 150 meteors per hour may be seen, depending on one's viewing location.

The Perseid meteors are so named because they look like they're radiating from the constellation Perseus.

Experts are of the view that on an average around 100 meteors may be seen per hour. Meteor showers are a great opportunity for time-lapse videos and long-exposure photography, allowing your shots of the night sky to turn into van Gogh-like paintings of this starry spectacle.

This weekend we'll have a new moon, and moonless nights are great for viewing another nighttime phenomenon - the Perseid Meteor Shower.

According to NASA, just because this weekend is the peak of the meteor shower doesn't mean they can't be seen afterward.

But in order to enjoy the sight of "shooting stars", clear skies are necessary. The peak days will be Saturday night and Sunday night. If you're surrounded by street lights, the meteors you would normally have been able to see "you can't because the sky is so filled with light". That will make the light from those meteors really pop! The ice and dust, accumulating over a thousand years, burn up in our atmosphere to create the meteor shower.

StormCenter 2 Severe Weather Specialist Brad Spakowitz says the meteors are remnants of Comet Swift-Tuttle. The meteors can appear anywhere in the sky, but they look the brightest against the darkest sky, which is straight up. The shower got its name from the fact that the meteors seem to come from a single point in the constellation Perseus.

Get out of the city, away from street lights.

People can also bring lawn chairs and blankets to watch the meteor shower from the grassy area around the observatory.

This is classified as an outburst rather than a meteor shower.

And don't forget to grab your camera before you head out.
