Major virus infection shuts down factories of iPhone chip-maker TSMC

We don't know which specific factories were hit with the viruses and shut down, and whether they were factories that are important to NVIDIA and its next-gen GeForce GTX 1180 and other graphics cards expected to be released imminently, or Apple's upcoming next-gen iPhone.

The virus wasn't introduced by a hacker, TSMC told the publication, adding that the company had contained the problem and restarted some manufacturing, though some facilities won't be back up till Sunday. As of right now, TSMC has not stated whether this virus was a form of ransomware or something else, so details are scarce.

The virus struck late on Friday night and led to the closure of several TSMC factories, and some of these are still not operational.

"TSMC expects this incident to cause shipment delays and additional costs", said the world's top foundry service provider in an update today about the impact of virus infection that it first reported on Saturday.

TSMC previously said about 10% of its revenues would be generated from its most-advanced 7nm process technology in the third quarter of 2018, and the proportion would reach 20% in the fourth quarter, with an over 20% in all of 2018. It maintained its 2018 forecast of boosting revenue by high single digits in USA dollar terms.

KGI Securities said in a report on Monday that while some of TSMC's 12-inch wafer shipments will be delayed, the impact to the upcoming iPhone launch is limited because "the upstream supply chain usually prepares for these incidents and manufactures surplus chipsets during the initial ramp-up stage". More detailed information on the situation will be shared on Monday. The three iPhones are likely to be powered by Apple's A12 processor, production for which the company began in May this year.

Aside from this issue, both Apple and TSMC are having a good year, with Apple boasting a market value in excess of $1 trillion. It's now the world's largest independent semiconductor foundry, booking a profit of $11.6 billion previous year.
