Man crashes plane into own house after fight with wife

A man has flown a plane into his own home after assaulting his wife in a nearby canyon, where they had gone to talk about their problems.

Sgt. Spencer Cannon, Utah County Sheriff's Office, said their officers responded to an area near the top of American Fork Canyon after witnesses reported seeing an ongoing assault involving Youd and his wife.

Within hours, Youd was taking off in the plane from the Spanish Fork-Springville Airport about 25 kilometres north of his house.

While at first saying "we can only speculate what the motive is behind it", Payson Police Sgt. Noemi Sandoval later told The Daily Herald that "we believe his crashing into the home was deliberate." Only its tail and one wing are mostly intact.

Reports indicate that Youd had agreed to attend six months of family counselling sessions as part of a plea agreement for domestic violence, in which he was charged with disorderly conduct.

In 2008, Youd, who has a 17-year-old son, Parker, earned a bachelor's degree from Utah Valley University where he studied Professional Aeronautical Science.

This frame from video shows the scene of a small plane that crashed into a house in Payson, Utah, on Monday, Aug 13.

Youd's wife as well as a boy were inside the house at the time of the crash.

Photos of the wreckage showed the plane charred and in pieces in the front yard with an overturned and crushed auto nearby. Youd and his wife bought the 2,700 square foot house valued at almost $400,000, in 2016 in a quiet subdivision of new homes near the foothills, county property records show.

Youd clipped a shed on the side of home, Sandoval said.
