Meat-heavy low-carb diets can ‘shorten lifespan’

Meat-heavy low-carb diets can ‘shorten lifespan’

These days more and more people are concerned with losing weight, and the prevalence of the low carb diet seems to be increasing. That's four years longer than those with very low carb consumption and one year longer than those with high carb consumption.

In-depth research With the study, 15,400 people from the USA completed questionnaires relating to the food and drink they consumed, plus information about portion sizes. They suggest that for optimum health we should eat 50 to 55 percent of calories from carbohydrates, which are typically found in potatoes, pasta and bread.

For the purposes of the study, people on a low-carbohydrate diet were those who had less than 40 percent of their daily calorie intake from carbohydrates, whereas those on a high-carbohydrate were those who got over 70 percent of their daily calorie intake from carbohydrates. Carbohydrates are one of three macronutrients (nutrients that form a large part of our diet) found in food; the others are fat and protein.

With many types of diets for people to try out, one of the most common is the low-carbohydrate diet.

The study also found that low-carb diets full of plant-based proteins and fats were particularly linked to a lower risk of death as compared to those rich in animal proteins and fats, such as chicken, beef, lamb, pork, and cheese.

But a USA study over 25 years indicates that moderate carb consumption - or switching meat for plant-based protein and fats - is healthier. She recommends that if you're following a low-carb diet to instead fill up on more plant-based fats and proteins-promoting healthy aging in the long term.

The results were concluded by a meta-study based on carbohydrate admission of individuals from more than 20 countries.

Interestingly, it was revealed that replacing carbohydrates with plant-based foods was linked to a lower risk of mortality.

"Too much and too little carbohydrate can be harmful but what counts most is the type of fat, protein, and carbohydrate".

"This work provides the most comprehensive study of carbohydrate intake that has been done to date, and helps us better understand the relationship between the specific components of diet and long-term health", said senior study author Dr. Scott Solomon, of Brigham and Women's Hospital and Harvard Medical School in Boston.

However, on the downside, the researchers involved in the study made their estimations based on observational associations and not on cause-and-effect data.

"Yet supporters of the cult of Low Carb High Fat eating will no doubt disagree with this newest research".

Writing in a linked Comment, Dr Andrew Mente and Dr Salim Yusuf from McMaster University, Hamilton, Canada say, "Such differences in risk associated with extreme differences in intake of a nutrient are plausible, but observational studies can not completely exclude residual confounders when the apparent differences are so modest". This approach maintains physiological processes and health (ie, a so-called sweet spot).

From this, scientists estimated the proportion of calories they got from carbohydrates, fats, and protein.
