Mobile Forges Powerhouse Alliance With Nokia To Fuel 2019 5G Wireless Rollout

USA major wireless carrier T-Mobile Inc. on Monday announced a landmark 3.5-billion-U.S. -dollar agreement with Finland's Nokia to accelerate the deployment of the first nationwide 5G network in the United States.

The agreement marks the world's largest 5G deal so far, news agency Reuters said.

T-Mobile said 5G promised to enable faster speeds, massive connectivity, decade-long battery life for sensors and super-responsive and reliable networks for customers.

Under the agreement, T-Mobile and Nokia said they would develop the "next generation of connectivity services" as part of the deal.

"It's our largest 5G deal to date, and in fact, one of the largest deals Nokia's ever signed", Phil Twist, vice president for marketing at Nokia's Mobile Networks unit, said by phone.

Nokia delivered lower profits in the first two quarters of 2018 but pledged to meet full-year targets as 5G demand begins to take off later this year. Ray went on to insist that "every dollar we spend is a 5G dollar" before pointing out that the investment was aimed at bringing U.S. customers a mobile, nationwide 5G network.

T-Mobile and Sprint, are using 5G to win President Donald Trump's backing for their merger that will reduce the USA mobile market from four players to three.

In February, T-Mobile said it planned to build out 5G in 30 cities this year, including New York, Los Angeles, Dallas, and Las Vegas, ahead of a launch of 5G smartphones next year.

While T-Mobile has announced its deployment schedule of 5G coverage to 30 U.S. cities by 2018, the company doesn't plan to sell any 5G enabled phones until early 2019, giving the company some time to test out the kinks.

Nokia's portfolio includes commercial AirScale radio platforms and cloud-native core, AirFrame hardware, CloudBand software, SON and 5G Acceleration Services.
