Netanyahu, Corbyn clash amid Munich wreath-laying dispute

'I was there because I wanted to see a fitting memorial to everyone who has died in every terrorist incident everywhere because we have to end it.

He also accused Mr Corbyn of comparing Israel to the Nazis - but a Labour statement reiterated a previous denial of that claim.

The photographs showed Mr Corbyn alongside senior Palestinian Authority figures, such as Dr Mohammed Shtayyeh and Jibril Rajoub, holding a wreath of flowers next to a line of graves.

The Home Secretary, Sajid Javid, has argued that Mr Corbyn should quit over the episode, while two widows of the murdered Israeli athletes said they were "extremely disturbed" by claims about the visit.

In a double-blow, Corbyn tweeted a second message slamming Israel for the nation state law which he said "discriminates against Israel's Palestinian minority".

UK Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn - longed dogged by anti-Semitism accusations - is facing a fresh round of criticism and calls for his resignation following the publication this weekend of photos that appear to show him laying a wreath at a memorial in Tunisia for Palestinian terrorists who perpetrated the 1972 Munich Massacre.

The Labour leader has been slammed by the Israeli Prime Minister after photos emerged of Mr Corbyn attending a Palestinian memorial ceremony.

On Saturday, Labour sources insisted that the photographs did not contradict Mr Corbyn's denial past year, despite the Daily Mail also republishing a quote from an article written by the Labour leader for the Morning Star in 2014, in which he appears to acknowledge there had been a wreath-laying commemoration for PLO figures.

He said it was important to ensure "you can discuss and debate the relations between Israel and Palestine, the future of the peace process and, yes, make criticisms of the actions of the Israeli government in the bombing of Gaza and other places". "The only way to pursue peace is a cycle of dialogue".

"He and other Parliamentarians went to the Palestinian cemetery in Tunisia to remember the victims of the 1985 Israeli bombing of the PLO headquarters". I don't think I was actually involved in it (laying it).

Jewish Labour MP Luciana Berger, a consistent critic of Corbyn's, mocked her party's leader's explanation on Twitter. "He of course condemns that bad attack, as he does the 1985 bombing". He told Sky's Tamara Cohen that he participated in the memorial to achieve peace in the Middle East, including having "laid the wreath" on behalf of the victims of an Israeli raid on the PLO organization in Tunis.

'There can also never be a "fitting memorial" for terrorists.

Writing in The Morning Star after the visit, Mr Corbyn said wreaths had been laid not only at the PLO memorial, but also "on the graves of others killed by Mossad [Israeli secret service] agents in Paris in 1991".

The Labour leadership is resisting calls to adopt in the full worldwide definition and examples of anti-Semitism.

Corbyn said today controversial version of the global definition of anti-Semitism agreed by Labour's ruling body was the "most sophisticated" of any political party.

'But you can never make those criticisms using anti-Semitic language or anti-Semitic intentions, and that is what we are absolutely clear on'.

The leader of Britain's Labour Party Jeremy Corbyn attends a housing policy event in London, April 19, 2018.

Labour says Mr Corbyn was "describing conditions of occupations in World War Two in Europe, of which there are multiple examples, not comparing the Israeli state to Nazis" and that the MP also had Soviet, Italian, British and USA occupations in mind, not just Nazi Germany's.
