Next Year's Oscars Will Feature "Popular" Movies And Will Be Much Shorter

Next Year's Oscars Will Feature

The Oscars are adding a new category for popular films and shortening the award ceremony to three hours.

The 2018 awards show, which clocked in at nearly four hours, was the least-watched Oscars to date.

Ironically, the Academy will look like it had a great idea here next Oscarcast, but a lot of that will be if the billion-dollar ceiling-shattering zeitgeist Marvel movie Black Panther gets nominations, especially if the film is in the mix for Best Picture.

The film academy is also shifting the date for the 92nd Academy Awards to earlier in the year.

It's among three changes approved on Tuesday by the Academy's board of governors.

In a message to its members the Academy said eligibility requirements for the new category and other key details would be "forthcoming". Starting next year, the ceremony will now be shown in what the Academy describes as "a more globally accessible, three-hour telecast". The 2019 show will still run on Sunday, Feb. 24. The body stated that the smaller awards will be presented during the telecast's commercial breaks, with the winning moments aired later in the broadcast. The new category will be called the Outstanding Achievement in Popular Film and was announced by Academy President John Bailey and Academy CEO Dawn Hudson in a letter (via THR).

It's hard to read this as anything but an acknowledgement of the continued complaint that the ceremony's major categories, specifically Best Picture, often highlight indie films and small-scale dramas, many of which haven't even been screened in certain parts of the United States and the world at the time of the Oscars telecast. The Board of Governors took this charge seriously. Many wrote that they hoped the category will be about stunt work. Sure. Will it mean as much if it's in a special category that some fans view as a consolation prize that lessens the impact of the blockbusters while also potentially dulling the shine on the Best Picture category?

Others blasted the academy with insults, calling the new changes "inane" and those who made them "cowards", while "Lord of the Rings" veteran Elijah Wood simply tweeted, "Best Popular Film? oof". "Popular films are films!"
