On the beach in Australia found giant teeth of ancient sharks

Mullaly's discovery was confirmed by senior curator of vertebrate paleontology Erich Fitzgerald, who determined that the newfound fossil belonged to a great jagged narrow-toothed shark.

After his initial find, Mullaly worked with a team from the Museums Victoria, the organization that administrates the Melbourne Museum, to uncover nearly 40 teeth in total between December 2017 and January 2018.

"If you think about how long we've been looking for fossils around the world as a civilization-which is maybe 200 years-in (that time) we have found just three (sets of) fossils of this kind on the entire planet, and this most recent find from Australia is one of those three", Fitzgerald told CNN.

That was just one of multiple teeth Mullaly found that day in 2015. He found 25-million-year-old teeth belonging to a mega-shark.

A walk on an Australian beach led to a pre-historic discovery that dates back millions of years.

Carcharocles angustidens being feasted upon by several sixgill sharks.

"These smaller teeth came from several different individuals and would have become dislodged from their jaws as they fed on the huge carcass of Carcharocles angustidens", said Museums Victoria paleontologist Tim Ziegler.

Mullaly donated the teeth to the Melbourne Museum, where they are on display until October 7.

Philip Mullaly found the set of shark teeth in Jan Juc, a renowned fossil site along Victoria's Surf Coast.

The teeth fossils are now on exhibit at Museums Victoria.

This makes the newfound fossils all the more extraordinary, as multiple shark teeth coming from the same specimen are notoriously hard to find.

Realizing the fossilized shark teeth was all from the same species, Dr. Fitzgerald and colleagues suspected that they came from one individual shark and there might be more teeth at Jan Juc. Some belonged to other species of shark, but a shocking number of them belong to the Carcharocles angustidens.

"The stench of blood and decaying flesh would have drawn scavengers from far around", he said. According to Fitzgerald, the vast majority of shark dental remains consist of single fossilized teeth. This means that the sixgill shark's behavior has not changed much for tens of millions of years.
