Pedestrians hurt as vehicle hits barriers at United Kingdom parliament, man arrested

Metropolitan Police have arrested the driver of a vehicle after he crashed into the barriers outside British Parliament in Westminster.

Police officers have cordoned the whole of Parliament Square off and are asking the public and press to move away from the scene.

Images posted to social media showed a man in handcuffs being led away from the auto by officers. Officers remain at the scene.

The Houses of Parliament are surrounded with security barriers of steel and concrete. "We will issue further info when we have it", London's police force said in a statement on Twitter.

Armed police immediately surrounded the silver auto after it crashed at 7.37am (06:37 GMT), pointing guns at the driver as he was removed from the vehicle, according to footage posted on Twitter.

According to Vincent McAviney, the police radio reported the incident would be treated as "counter-terror". A series of ambulances arrived at the scene.

"The person driving did not go out" of the vehicle, she said.

They also confirmed a number of pedestrains had been injured, and the male driver had been detained at the scene.

"Anyone who knows this area will know that there is a filter off that allows vehicles to go into Parliament itself... there is a big barrier that comes across the road, created to protect the buildings".
