Pregnant mum served cleaning agent instead of latte at McDonald's

A McDonald's franchise in Alberta, Canada has apologized after one of its customer was reportedly served a latte that had cleaning fluid in it.

Sarah Douglas was on her way to a baseball tournament with her son when they stopped at the drive-through.

The first sip was enough to tell Ms Douglas that something was wrong with the drink.

"I had no idea what I was drinking", Douglas said.

A worker then told Douglas cleaning lines were attached to the coffee machine, and went to fetch the bottle of cleaning solution that was hooked up to the machine at the time.

She used that information when she talked with Alberta Health Services' Health Link at 811, which transferred her to poison control.

It was a good thing she declined a new one, as the franchise owner released a statement saying the milk supply line was connected to the cleaning solution line while the drink was being made.

Mr Brown also issued a statement calling the incident "unfortunate".

She immediately spat out the liquid, which she described as being a watery brown colour.

The warning label on the solution reads, in part: 'Causes serious eye irritation. She said she hoped her experience could be used as a learning tool to bring awareness to the chain about enforcing proper procedures or perhaps improving employee training. She has not suffered any health effects, but was told if she develops shortness of breath or difficulty swallowing she should go to the hospital. May cause an allergic skin reaction. "Wear protective gloves/eye protection", the label of the cleaning fluid warns.

Alberta Health Services says public health officers are investigating.

According to McDonald's, a health inspector visited and will not investigate further.

While she's expected to be OK, Douglas said she's chose to come forward in hopes that something like this doesn't happen again.

She said she was anxious that if cleaning solutions such as the one used in the coffee maker were also used for juice, soft-serve or pop machines, a child could ingest the chemicals, with more serious consequences.

"As a mother, I want to make sure I have voice and that I'm being heard in terms of the safety of consumers, and how (alleged) negligence can affect people in such a drastic way", she said.
