President Donald Trump signs new conditions for lifting Zimbabwe sanctions

Despite the contentious election result, the state-owned Herald newspaper has reported that President-elect Emmerson Mnangwagwa will be inaugurated on Sunday, 12 August.

The MDC alliance filed their paperwork with Zimbabwe's Constitutional Court on Friday, alleging the result of the July 30 vote had been rigged in favour of incumbent Mnangagwa, the leader of the ruling ZANU-PF party. "For now it has been stayed pending determination of the court challenge", Zimbabwe's Justice Minister Ziyambi Ziyambi, said.

The MDC Alliance and its leader Nelson Chamisa arrived at the Constitutional Court premises in the capital, Harare, to file papers on the deadline for submissions into electoral challenges.

Jameson Timba, a senior member of the MDC, said his party "will rest when this country is liberated".

Chamisa has claimed he won 56 percent of votes and called the election "fraudulent, illegal and illegitimate".

Mnangagwa narrowly won the presidential race with 50.8 percent of the vote - just enough to avoid a run-off against the MDC's Nelson Chamisa, who scored 44.3 percent.

The latest developments mean the planned inauguration of President-elect Emmerson Mnangagwa, can not go ahead today as scheduled as the court has to deal with the matter first. We have a good case and cause!

The Constitutional Court, which can declare a new victor or order a fresh election, must rule within 14 days of an election petition.

Judges could declare a victor, call another election, or order a run-off or recount, the Veritas legal group said. "There is no inauguration that will take place until the matter is determined by the court".

"If [the judges] think the evidence is weak they could throw the case out fairly fast".

"At the moment, we are not moving forward because according to the Constitution we should wait for seven days after declaration of the results so that if there is anyone who wants to appeal against the results, they do so", President Mnangagwa said.

Chamisa wants the constitutional court to declare him the victor or call a fresh election, it is reported.
