Root's 'mic-drop' mocked as India shade day-one honours

Root's 'mic-drop' mocked as India shade day-one honours

BIRMINGHAM: England captain Joe Root´s unbeaten 65 helped steer his side to 163 for three against India at tea on the first day of the first Test at Edgbaston on Wednesday.

Television replays suggested Kohli might have accompanied his gestures with strong language but speaking after the close, Keaton Jennings said that England did not mind Kohli's reaction.

It will be for Jeff Crowe, the match referee, to determine whether the celebration constitutes...

English cricket team reached a milestone on 1 August becoming the first team to play their 1,000th Test match in the 142-year history of Test cricket.

"He (Kohli) celebrated, and that´s cool", the opening batsman added.

England, who were 216 for four when Root was dismissed, lost their next four wickets for 27 runs, with spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, who ended the day with four wickets, inflicting the bulk of the damage for the visitors.

Half-centuries from Root and Jonny Bairstow put the hosts in a commanding position at Edgbaston but Kohli's athletic run out saw momentum swing in India's favour.

One way Bairstow could have atoned for his part in denying Root a 14th Test century was to have gone to three figures himself.

And when Ben Stokes (21) chipped a gentle return catch to Ashwin, England were 243 for seven.

Curran was given a lucky let-off when he was dropped by the diving wicketkeeper Dinesh Karthik off Shami's penultimate ball of the day.

Kohli celebrated the dismissal with a "mic-drop" send-off, something Root had done after guiding England to a 2-1 ODI series win against India last month.

At lunch, the England skipper had struck four fours in 63 balls faced, with Jennings also hitting four boundaries.

It was a peculiar dismissal and it came immediately after a delay in play caused by a pigeon that refused to move from short mid-wicket despite the best efforts of both Jennings and captain Joe Root.

After taking two for 64 in 19 overs, Shami was pleased by the way India´s seamers had bowled with Ashwin and he insisted they had not been hampered by the absence of a second specialist slow bowler.
