Sakkari upsets Venus Williams to reach Silicon Valley semis

Trailing by a set and facing a 4-1 deficit in the second set against Collins, Sakkari completed a shocking turnaround to beat the American 3-6 7-5 6-2 in the semi-final.

Mihaela Buzarnescu cruised to her first WTA title by dominating first-time finalist Maria Sakkari 6-1, 6-0 at the Silicon Valley Classic on Sunday (Aug 5).

Collins reaches her second semi-final of the year and will play the victor of the late match between Venus Williams and Maria Sakkari.

Konta broke serve in the opening game of the second set, only for Mertens to take the Briton's first two service games on her way to victory.

Williams has not advanced past the third round of a tournament since March and has yet to find the form that helped her reach two Grand Slam finals in 2017. She needed one hour and 43 minutes to beat Williams, and saved two set points in the second set in the process.

Mertens required medical attention for a right forearm injury and Buzarnescu powered on to claim the last six games and a 4-6 6-3 6-1 victory.

The 2013 runner-up rallied from a set down to defeat second seed Sloane Stephens on Thursday, and continued her momentum at the Washington DC event.

But the 38-year-old third seed came unstuck in the quarter-finals, Greek world number 49 Sakkari winning 6-4 7-6 (7-2) in the WTA Premier event in San Jose.

"I thought I was really solid throughout the whole match", Petkovic told reporters.

"I'm looking forward to playing one of the most in-form players of the year and really just do my best against that."
