Serena Williams withdraws from Rogers Cup

Halep was on hand at the draw ceremony, and will begin her Rogers Cup campaign against either former World No.13 Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova or a qualifier; falling in the same half of the draw as Wimbledon champion and No.4 seed Angelique Kerber.

"Of course, we are disappointed that Serena will not be joining us", tournament director Eugene Lapierre said in a statement, noting that despite the 23-time Grand Slam winner's absence, all of the top 10 players in the world are in the draw for one of the key tuneups for the US Open.

The message, transferred via press release, did not offer any further explanation or contain a personal statement from the 23-time Grand Slam victor.

Tennis Canada made the announcement Saturday morning, saying that Williams will take a short hiatus from the sport.

The 36-year-old has suffered the worst defeat of her career this week in San Jose, losing 12 straight games against Johanna Konta, and she wasn't ready to play Montreal and Cincinnati in back-to-back weeks. That was her fourth tournament since returning to the tour after having a baby in September and dealing with a health scare related to blood clots.

Despite his disappointment at Williams' withdrawal, Lapierre stressed that the competition level at the Rogers Cup remains "incredible".
