Spain's Footballers Union complains about Liga USA plan

Spain's Footballers Union complains about Liga USA plan

The first game could be played this season, after La Liga signed a 15-year partnership with Relevant Sports.

The group operates the International Champions Cup, the world's largest summer club tournament.

La Liga features two of the world's most profitable and popular teams in Barcelona and Real Madrid.

Spain's top football league, LaLiga will play competitive matches in the USA as early as this season.

With LaLiga North America set up as a new organisation, Relevent say the agreement will boost Spanish football's "growth in the U.S. and Canada through consumer-related activities, including youth academies, development of youth soccer coaches, marketing agreements, consumer activations, exhibition matches and plans to have an official LaLiga match played in the US".

"LaLiga, Spain's top-flight soccer competition, and Relevent, a multinational media, sports and entertainment group, today announced a first-of-a-kind 15-year, equal joint venture to promote soccer in the US and Canada", said a statement.

La Liga have announced they will play at least one regular game a season in North America. A league game in the USA would be the first to be played outside of Europe.

He said: "We're devoted to growing the passion for football around the world". "This agreement ensures not only a bright future for soccer in North America, but also for La Liga and our clubs".

The Premier League has more exposure than its Spanish counterpart in the United States, in part because of a six-year TV deal with NBC worth about $1billion (£790m).

"This extraordinary joint venture is the next giant leap in growing soccer's popularity in North America", said Stephen Ross, owner of Relevent and National Football League team Miami Dolphins.

They played against top European sides such as AC Milan, AS Roma, Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United in the International Champions Cup, a tournament organised by Relevent.
