Subtropical Storm Debby develops in the Atlantic

It's located around 1,200 miles west-northwest of The Azores, with winds that have picked up a little to 45 mph as it moves north-northeast at 9 mph. However, tropical-storm-force winds and pounding, risky surf are possible late Tuesday and Wednesday.

High rainfall from deep tropical moisture surrounding Hector is predicted to affect the Puna and Kau districts of the Big Island as the hurricane passes by south of the state. Some local flash flooding is possible in a few spots, particularly along east-, south- or southeastward-facing slopes of the Big Island.

Farther out in the Pacific, Tropical Storm Kristy had sustained winds of 45 miles per hour (75 kph) and was moving west-northwest at 8 miles per hour (13 kph). "If it does, it will become Typhoon Hector". Mexican officials discontinued a hurricane watch from Punta San Telmo in Michoacan state to Playa Perula in Jalisco state, though Ileana still could cause heavy surf and rains in that area.

More news: Sunday storm chances followed by cooler weather

More than two months into the 2018 Atlantic hurricane season, the forecasters' predictions of a quiet year appear to be accurate.

A tropical storm warning has been posted for the Big Island of Hawaii, where tropical-storm-force winds (39-plus mph) are expected Wednesday, especially downslope from mountains, across elevated terrain, over headlands and through gaps. Depending on its ultimate track, the storm could bring thunderstorms, gusty winds and increased surf to parts of the island and could also cause risky rip currents off the east- and south-facing beaches.

Last week finished up with a hurricane and three disturbances in the East Pacific tropics.
