Tommy Robinson freed on bail after court quashes contempt conviction

Tommy Robinson freed on bail after court quashes contempt conviction

Former English Defence League (EDL) leader Tommy Robinson is to find out the result of legal challenges he launched after being jailed for 13 months for contempt of court.

A small number of supporters, some wearing "Free Tommy Robinson" T-shirts gathered outside court ahead of the ruling.

Judges at the Court of Appeal agreed, quashed his conviction and ordered the case to be heard again.

Operating under #FreeTommy, there have been concerted protests against Robinson's sentence.

Lord Chief Justice Lord Burnett and two other leading judges will announce their decision in his case on Wednesday at the Court of Appeal.

Robinson, real name Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, was pictured being led away from prison this afternoon surrounded by journalists and photographers.

Lord Burnett, giving reasons for the court's decision relating to the Leeds Crown Court allegation, said that once Robinson "had removed the video from Facebook there was no longer sufficient urgency to justify immediate proceedings". The two groups exchanged chants, but were separated by police to avoid violence.

British law allows judges to impose restrictions on reporting of details around ongoing court cases to prevent jurors from being influenced by material they might come across outside the courtroom.

"During his live-streaming the appellant had referred to the supposed religion of the defendants, the ethnicity of the alleged victims, the costs of the prosecutions, and (he) questioned why publication was prohibited", Burnett said.

Robinson was jailed in May after he filmed people involved in a criminal trial and broadcast the footage on social media.

No date has been set for the new hearing at the Old Bailey.
