Tommy Robinson wins appeal over contempt sentence, will be released

Jailed anti-Muslim activist Tommy Robinson has been released on bail after his appeal against a conviction for contempt of court was partially granted by a London court.

The judgment said Robinson was detained outside Leeds Crown Court after using social media to broadcast details of trials involving 28 Asian men which is subject to blanket reporting restrictions.

The Lord Chief Justice Lord Burnett and two other judges quashed the finding and sentence, made in May, and ordered a new hearing of the allegation.

We are satisfied that the finding of contempt made in Leeds following a fundamentally flawed process, in what we recognise were hard and unusual circumstances, can not stand.

Heidi Beirich, deputy director of the Southern Poverty Law Center, which monitors hate groups across the U.S., said the level of support for Robinson was "extraordinary".

British former far-right leader Tommy Robinson was freed from prison on Wednesday after winning a legal challenge in a case that has galvanized his supporters worldwide.

Demonstrators in London protested the decision by the court.

He was first arrested on suspicion of breaching the peace by streaming a video outside Leeds Crown Court.

The 35-year-old admitted the charge and was jailed in May for filming outside Leeds Crown Court during a trial.

Robinson may be sent back to jail after the judges rejected his lawyers' argument that there should not be a fresh hearing because he has already served the equivalent of a four-month sentence.

Around 20 supporters, outnumbered two to one by police officers, chanted his name outside court while another 20 or so counter-protesters were also present.

The footage, which lasted around an hour, was watched 250,000 times within hours of being posted on Facebook.

He was sentenced to 10 months for contempt of court and given a further three months for breaching the terms of a previous suspended sentence.

The judges announced they had dismissed Robinson's appeal in respect of the contempt finding at Canterbury Crown Court.

The QC said the proceedings in Leeds had been "unnecessarily and unjustifiably rushed".

But we still haven't heard the exact nature of the contempt and the judgement summary says: "There was no clarity about what the appellant (Robinson) was admitting or on what basis he was being sentenced". Robinson supporters wearing "Free Tommy" t-shirts cheered and burst into tears outside the Court of Appeal today, after months of campaigning for his release.
