Trump praises Italy’s Conte on immigration

President Donald Trump is meeting with Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte at the White House as the U.S.is kicking off new trade talks with the European Union.

"I agree very much with what you are doing with respect to migration, and illegal immigration, and even legal immigration", Trump told Conte in the Oval Office. But they see things differently when it comes to trade and military spending - two issues that are bound to come up in today's chit-chat.

He said he and Conte were "united in our conviction that strong nations must have strong borders", and went on to discuss the U.S. government's plans for national border security and its counter-terrorism efforts.

Last week, McConnell said on a radio show in his home state of Kentucky that a government shutdown is "not going to happen".

Despite the recent rise in protectionist measures, the sector boosted its sales to the United States by some 4 percent in the first quarter of 2018, after exceeding a record high of 4 billion euros (4.67 billion US dollars) in value previous year, Coldiretti said in a statement on Monday.

Trump has proved to be an inconsistent negotiating partner with Capitol Hill, as evidenced by his most recent mixed messages on a potential shutdown.

Republicans anxious about keeping control of Congress think it's a bad idea, but President Donald Trump says he's still willing to close the government over border security issues, including money to build a promised U.S. -Mexico border wall.

Trump met at the White House last week with House Speaker Paul Ryan and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell. "Must get rid of Lottery, Catch & Release etc. and finally go to system of Immigration based on MERIT!"

Short also said he believes Trump is being honest about a showdown with Democrats over government funding and Trump's proposed border wall. "It doesn't help us right now".

Trump is also defending U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, saying it defends the U.S. against "MS-13 nests" of "bad, bad people".

Trump is noting that Italian voters got "tired" of their country's immigration policies. And he wants to shift the USA immigration system to one based more on individual merit and less on family ties.

A shutdown over Trump's wall at the September deadline would mark the third lapse in appropriations this year, following a shutdown in January.

Democrats have long opposed financing the wall but don't have enough votes by themselves to block House approval of that amount. After the meeting, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell told a radio interviewer that a shutdown so close to the November 6 midterm elections wouldn't happen.

The $5 billion is well above the $1.6 billion in the Senate version of a bill funding the Department of Homeland Security.

At last week's White House meeting, Trump, Ryan and McConnell agreed that Congress was on track to enact more than half of federal spending before the new budget year begins October 1, but that DHS funding, including the border wall money, doesn't have to be settled before then, according to a person familiar with the meeting who was not authorized to discuss it publicly and insisted on condition of anonymity.
