Trump praises Italy's Conte on immigration

Will he or won't he?

President Trump doubled-down on his signature campaign promise this week; telling Democrats he has "no problem" shutting down the federal government should they fail to fully fund his border wall.

This idea has landed with a resounding thud among Congressional Republicans, virtually all of whom recognize that an unpopular shutdown - triggered by the party in power, just before an election - would erect yet another hard hurdle to maintaining the GOP majorities. The president tweeted Tuesday that he did not care about the "political ramifications", adding that "a Government Shutdown is a very small price to pay for a safe and Prosperous America!" Conte is turning out to be Trump's main supporter and ally in Europe. "The president made it very clear to the leadership that a fight was coming and he's done putting it off", the administration official said. "The Democrats want Open Borders".

Both leaders however stressed that they were open to dialogue with Russian Federation. Earlier this year he publicly weighed vetoing a government spending bill he had backed just days earlier, facing criticism from conservative allies that it didn't address his immigration priorities.

He stressed that the "European Union now has a responsibility" to help Italy manage migration, while Trump said he hoped more European leaders would follow Conte's example of "bold leadership".

The Wall Street Journal's editorial page, influential in Republican circles, responded by branding the gambit "Trump's Lose-the-House Strategy".

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) and House Speaker Paul D. Ryan (R-Wis.) have laid out a strategy to fund more than half of federal agencies by a September 30 deadline. He said the border funding issue in particular would probably have to wait until after the elections.

Mr Trump tweeted: "We must have Border Security, get rid of Chain, Lottery, Catch & Release Sanctuary Cities - go to Merit based Immigration".

He said he and Conte were "united in our conviction that strong nations must have strong borders", and went on to discuss the U.S. government's plans for national border security and its counter-terrorism efforts. That would set up another fiscal showdown during a lame-duck session.

They say they will wait until later to seek US$5 billion for the wall on the US-Mexico border.

Trump has gotten some wall money from Congress, and likely will get more, though the total is well short of the $25 billion he has requested. He has since pledged to crackdown on immigration and expand the country's welfare program. "I'm ready to meet whenever they want to". And he wants to shift the US immigration system to one based more on individual merit and less on family ties.
