Trump touts record with minorities after Omarosa criticism, ahead of Charlottesville anniversary

President Donald Trump on Saturday used one of his morning Twitter missives to acknowledge that the weekend marks the first anniversary of Charlottesville, Virginia's deadly white nationalist rally and to condemn racism in America.

One person died and several others were injured on August 12 previous year when a vehicle ploughed into counter protesters who had taken to the streets to oppose a Unite the Right rally of white nationalists.

Trump drew strong criticism in the days after the Charlottesville rally past year for equating white supremacists with counter-protesters and saying "both sides" were to blame.

In his Saturday tweet, Mr. Trump did not specifically call out white nationalists, but referred generally to "riots" in Charlottesville that "resulted in senseless death and division". I condemn all types of racism and acts of violence. Peace to ALL Americans!'

Saturday's march capped a day of hope, grief, anger and remembrance in Charlottesville, one year after the "Unite the Right" rally brought racially charged street violence to the scenic college town.

Carlson's group locked arms and chanted slogans of their own, including "Black Lives Matter!" and "No Nazis, No KKK, No Fascist USA!".

- Businesses in the District where white nationalist, white supremacist and neo-Nazis are planning to hold the Unite the Right rally on Sunday have stated they will refuse service to anyone with hate in their heart.

Hundreds of students and protesters descended on Charlottesville's downtown mall and the University of Virginia on Saturday.

Violent fighting broke out between attendees and counter-protesters that day. "It looked like a war zone past year compared to what it is today".

"Nothing would excite us any better than for this to be noneventful and folks to go home and it be a peaceful weekend for all", Settle said.

Heather Heyer, a 32-year-old legal assistant, was struck and killed when a white supremacist slammed his auto into a crowd of counterprotesters.

But as the anniversary of the rally approached, Trump appeared to try to get ahead of Sunday's "Unite the Right 2" rally in Washington, D.C., and counterprotests by calling for unity.

The president of the University of Virginia has offered an apology to the students and community members who faced off a year ago against white supremacists during a march through campus.

Authorities said two people were arrested, one for trespassing and the other for disorderly conduct.

Kessler had applied for a permit to hold his anniversary rally in Charlottesville, and had sued the city when they denied him the permit, but he dropped his battle with the city in late July.

In August 2017, white supremacist demonstrators and counterprotesters squared off in violent clashes in Charlottesville, site of the University of Virginia.

An independent investigation of last year's rally violence found the chaos stemmed from a passive response by law enforcement and poor preparation and coordination between state and city police.

"I don't know exactly what will happen, but it probably will not be good", tweeted Richard Spencer, a leader of the so-called "alt-right" movement, who said he would be staying away from the rally.
